Category: Aquarium Plants

Anubias barteri var. barteri from West Africa is an undemanding plant. It grows somewhat larger than Anubias barteri var. nana but is grown in the same conditions. From 25-45 cm tall and a creeping rhizome from 10-15 cm or more. Anubias barteri varies considerably in terms of size and leaf shape.

Like other Anubias-species, it is best planted in a shady spot to minimize algae growth on the leaves. It is also suitable for terrariums and paludariums. Herbivorous fish do not eat the very tough and robust leaves.

For a long time there has a myth been going around that anubias (when pruned or cut) would be poisonous to shrimp and other inverts. This is NOT true and anubias are perfect plants for your shrimp tank and 100% safe.

Sophia ★★★★★

I’ve had good luck with this Anubias in my low-tech tank—it’s already sending out new leaves after just a week, and the taller growth fits perfectly in the background. The creeping rhizome was easy to attach to driftwood without any fuss.

Sophia L. ★★★★★

The rhizome arrived firm and healthy, and it’s already gripping the driftwood after just a week. I love that it’s taller than the nana variety, so it fills the midground nicely without any special care.

David ★★★★★

This Anubias is exactly what my taller tank needed — it’s already pushing 30 cm after a few weeks and the leaves are a rich, deep green. I just tied it to a piece of driftwood and it’s thriving without any extra CO2 or fuss.
