Category: Aquarium Substrate

Colombo Mano Base is a natural substrate that can be used as a top layer in any aquarium, from beginner to specialist. Unlike solid gravel, Mano Base is open and light, both in terms of particles and structure. The open particles enable rapid and mass colonisation by beneficial bacteria, which are vital for the stability of the water quality. The open structure allows optimal rooting of the plants and water penetration, so there is no suffocation of the soil. As Colombo Mano Base is made from natural clay sources, it has the beautiful natural look you want in your aquarium. The particles are rounded and relatively soft, so that bottom dwellers will not damage their soft barbels. Like clay, Mano Base can store nutrients when they are present in excess in the water, and release these nutrients when the level drops. Thus, Mano Base enables optimal plant growth and reduces algae blooms.

William ★★★★★

The base is so much lighter than gravel that it settled in beautifully over my sand layer without compacting into a hard slab, and my corys are constantly sifting through it. I’ve tried several substrates over the years and this one just feels more natural, like real riverbed. Plants are holding fir

Lily E. ★★★★★

The open, airy structure of this substrate makes it so much easier to plant delicate stems compared to dense gravel I've used before. My fish seem to love sifting through the natural particles, and the reddish hue really brings out their color.

Violet ★★★★★

The light, open texture of this substrate made planting so much easier than with gravel—my roots spread out nicely. It settled quickly with just a quick rinse before adding water.
