Akadama – The Ultimate Substrate for Thriving Aquatic Plants
(Akadama means "red ball earth" in Japanese.)

Hugo Kamishi’s Akadama substrate is crafted from volcanic clay, a material traditionally used for centuries by expert bonsai growers in Japan. Recognizing its incredible water and nutrient retention properties, Hugo Kamishi adapted Akadama for water gardens, creating an ideal base substrate to nurture aquatic plant roots.

With its porous structure, Akadama promotes excellent water circulation while naturally lowering pH and KH levels, helping to maintain balanced water chemistry.

This is a popular cheap alternative to active soils and has often been used in the shrimp hobby. The substrate can be capped with gravel or used by itself (if the colour is not a problem). Traditionally, Akadama is quite dusty. Do not rinse it, just fill the tank very slowly via a plate or some bubble wrap.

Riley M. ★★★★★

My shrimp tank has never looked better since I switched to this akadama. The volcanic clay grains keep their shape after months underwater, and the reddish-brown tint makes the green plants really pop.

Hazel T. ★★★★★

The 1-4mm grain size is perfect for my carpeting plants; their roots are able to anchor firmly without the substrate being too heavy. I've noticed my water stays clearer compared to my old sand, and the slight red tint from the clay actually looks natural.

Andrew S. ★★★★★

After switching to this volcanic clay substrate, I noticed the water stays clear for days longer than with my previous gravel. The 1-4mm grain size is perfect for my carpeting plants to root without floating away.
